Shyam Sunder Paliwal, Padma Shri awardee, is the decision maker for the village of Piplantri in Rajasthan, as well as a member of the block level council for the Rajasthan government. When his daughter passed due to dehydration, he started the 111 tree initiative in her honor.
This initiative goes far beyond tree planting. It encourages villages to increase their sanitation practices, practice water conservation, and to be more conscious of the environment. This initially started in the village of Piplantri, Rajasthan, and spread to 157 other villages in Rajasthan that have adopted these practices as well. These practices bring tourism and activities that fuel the local economy, slowing down migration from villages to big cities.
