San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz knows firsthand just how the human spirit can soar in the face of adversity caused by climate-related disaster — and that help comes in from all directions.

After Hurricane Maria in 2017, help came in the form of a green invention called the “SolarPuff,” which allowed citizens to retake their community spaces and environment through the gift of light.

Mayor Cruz explains that while she is grateful for help, she wishes that “we had a way to bottle that (the human spirit) so we didn’t have to wait for a crisis to be kind to one another and to take care of one another.”
